I have been getting this question a lot as of lately, especially when C2E2 recently passed. This is how I do it.
Day One: Friday
I never spend any money on the first day. I think that you have so much to look at before you decide to make your first purchase. Unless you came across a major deal that you know that you can't beat, then it could wait.
There is also panels that you can district yourself with. Panels is conversations and learning experiences with famous people that would naturally be a rare opportunity.
Autographs is also good idea as well. If there is an autograph you wanted, the lines should small being a Friday and everyone was at work.
Day Two: Saturday
I would start looking toward spending. This is geared toward the stuff you lost sleep over the night before.
The quality panels are also around this time. Big-name pros on at the convention? Most likely they have a panel going on this day. Just remember to set some sort of alarm, because just like a casino, comic conventions do not have any windows (well at least in Chicago, they don't) and it is easy to lose track of time on the show floor. Time they can be wasted through out the weekend.
Autographs will be a near impossible due to the lines for them. This can easily eat up show floor hours waiting for them, especially if you're not one of the first people in lines.
Day Three: Sunday
This is normally my follow-up day, if I needed an autograph or to buy something, I would spend the day hunting them down.
This is also kids day, so if you have a family with young children, I recommend bringing them this day. I normally bring my kids this day. A lot of conventions try to aim toward family friendly content on Sundays. At C2E2, there are panels that can keep a family busy for hours.
This day is normally not as busy as Saturday but this is a much shorter day than the other two.
A few other recommendations..
- Shower daily.
A lot of sweaty bodies in a small space and that can be disgusting and no one wants to be that guy.
-Bring snacks or prepare for food.
I always bring some granola bars, preferably variety box so I don't get sick of the taste. I also know the closest McDonalds/ eatery around the convention to avoid paying ten dollars for a two-buck slice of pizza.
Finally, either arrive early or late. Never on time. So many people try to arrive on time and it just takes too much time to get in. That or plan to sit in on a panel to see for the first hour so you can clearly avoid the cattle line.
I hope this helps, feel free to send some comments, questions, or concerns.
